Security Breach Incident of MyFitnessPal

Data of more than 150 million users of a well-known fitness and dietary app called “MyFitnessPal” had been hacked on March 29, 2918. Users’ usernames, email addresses and passwords were stolen. After the company noticed that an unauthorized person had accessed the data on February, they immediately started to notify their users through in-app messaging and emails. The company then urged the users to change their passwords immediately. Unfortunately, it is still unclear who had orchestrated the data breach which stole the data of millions of users.

Under Armour, MyFitnessPal’s parent company, then claimed that their users’ financial information were not affected by the breach in any way. The damage caused by this incident is considered moderate since the company does not collect any government-issued identifiers like driver’s license numbers or social security numbers. Right now, the company is trying to find out how the hackers were able to get into their system without being noticed.

And although having your fitness and dietary progress stolen may seem like it doesn’t matter, the information can still have bigger power than what the users may think. For instance, the app has the capability to know the precise performance and location of its users. This means that if another person has the capability to access a user’s account, then they will also hold the capability of knowing about the user’s location and how fast the user is currently going. The users are then in potential danger and can be tracked by whoever holds their data.

Securing Your Data

This is an important reminder that any personal data can be easily hacked in this age of modern technology. In order to secure their private data, listed below are some of the things that individuals can do in order to secure their own private data.

1. Setting Strong Passwords

While some people may prefer generic and easy password, it is still best to at least put an effort in setting your passwords. Though it is a very small detail, hackers may still end up having a hard time in cracking your password if you set it into a difficult one, thus protecting your account until the issue is fixed.

2. Knowing the App’s Terms and Services Conditions

While most people like to skip on reading the terms and services, it is still of great importance for the users to have knowledge about what the company plans on doing with the data that they share with the app. It is of great importance that the users are aware of what the app can do.

While breaches like these are becoming common today and companies have the ability to protect their users, it is still important that the users take precautionary measures in protecting their private information.
